Lasek (eye surgery)

Some people may not be suitable candidates for Laser eye surgery, if you suffer any of the following conditions; you should discuss this further with your surgeon.

If you are under 18 years old or have had a refraction that has changed in the past two years
Have a history of dry eyes
Take medications, such as steroids or immunosuppressant, that affect healing
Have an autoimmune disorder that affects healing.
Have corneal scarring
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have been diagnosed with herpes
Have refractive errors that yet can not be treated with current technology

Your surgeon can often work around them, but each of these conditions makes eye laser surgery inadvisable or problematic and may increases the risk of complications. Most of these problems can be easily treated and resolved in following months after surgery.

THE NORMAL EYE

The normal function of an eye is like a camera, that light passes through a lens simply back onto the film. The cornea and lens are at the front of the eye and are similar to a camera's lens. The retina is located at the back of the eye and is similar to a camera's film. In the normal eye, light rays of an image pass through the cornea and the lens and are focused directly on the retina to produce a clear image.

Hyperopia (Farsightedness)

A Patient who suffers with farsightedness can focus on more distant objects, but not images that are close. Surgical treatment options include clear lens extraction and LASIK. While there are numerous other procedures available, not all individuals are candidates for specific procedures. Patients should discuss their options with their physicians prior to making any informed decisions.

Myopia (Nearsightedness)

In a person that suffers nearsightedness, the light rays are passed through the cornea and lens but the focus is in front of the retina, not on the retina. This diagram displays clear images of near objects but not those that are far away. Surgical procedure options include LASEK or LASIK laser treatment. While there are numerous other surgical options available, not all individuals are suitable candidates. Patients should review there options with their surgeon prior to making any final decisions.
