Morocco Road Notes: Medina Logic, Mountains, and Desert Timing

How to sequence Marrakech, the High Atlas, and a Sahara camp without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Morocco moves between sensory intensity and wide silence. Sequence cities and landscapes so neither cancels the other out.

Marrakech first — but not forever

Two nights is enough for the medina’s rhythm: morning souks, afternoon riad courtyard, evening Jemaa el-Fna from a terrace rather than the thickest crowd.

Atlas crossing

Hire a driver for the Tizi n’Tichka route toward Ouarzazate. Stop for lunch in mountain villages; the drive is half the experience.

Desert nights

A one-night Sahara camp works if you leave early and accept sand time as the point. Two nights is better if you want sunrise and a slower camel-free hike option.

  • Carry small bills for tips and water.
  • Dress for mosque neighborhoods with covered shoulders and knees.
  • Confirm whether dinners are included at your riad or camp.
