Tokyo Food Without Reservations Panic

How to eat extremely well in Tokyo with a mix of walk-ins, department food halls, and a few booked meals.

You do not need a month of restaurant bookings to eat memorably in Tokyo. You need a strategy.

The mix that works

  • Book 1–2 special meals. Leave the rest open.
  • Use depachika (department basement food halls) for excellent grazing.
  • Follow lunch queues at neighborhood spots instead of only nightlife lists.

If a place looks full, ask about counter seats or return times. Soft no’s often become later yeses.
